crisis in our town MAU

CRISIS in MAU [:(]
Mau cloth industry facing serious crisis Mau: Mau Nath Bhanjan’s textile industry is presently facing serious crisis because of a number of factors such as exorbitant increase in electricity charges, very limited supply of power, non-supply of raw material etc. Textile and cloth industry is facing extreme difficulties with every passing day as a result of which thousands of people associated with this industry are faced with the problem of earning their bread.

There was a time when sarees, ‘lungis’, ‘dhotis’, sheets etc made in Mau had their own distinct identity throughout the country and these things were presented to friends and relatives as gifts but now the position has become very critical and people, who are mostly weavers, economic condition is deteriorating day by day. Political instability and communal tension has greatly harmed this industry.

Excessive increase in the price of cotton, terrycot and nylon threads has broken the backbone of weavers and they have been forced to look torward other jobs. When power looms were introduced in this place in 1960 people felt extremely happy. Swadeshi Cotton Mill, Swadeshi Mill etc were set up but shortly after that the financial condition of small weavers working on hand looms gradually started deteriorating.
